Farewell New York

The move from New York back to California was a long and painful process on many levels. From March to September we spent countless hours of sorting, trashing, donating and packing, and still found ourselves with so much STUFF to have loaded into a semi and shipped across the USA. I deliberately took no pictures of this crazy endeavor. Then there was our NY home to sell in a market that just couldn't find the bottom. There were sad goodbyes to our dear friends and all the minute logistics of leaving jobs, shipping vehicles, closing accounts, forwarding mail...yadayada

BUT! We did it and are thrilled to be renting a condo in beautiful Avila Beach nearer our children & grandchildren. It took 10 people ( including the 4 outside of camera range) to sign the sale papers on our home.
The semi loaded with our earthly goods arrived at Ryan's Ranch on the morning of September 19th to sort what what was being moved to our Avila Beach Condo and what was to be stored in Ryan's barn. To our amazement, this California black bear showed up on scene.

Our first weekend in SLO we gathered with family and friends at the barn to celebrate Abby's 9th birthday. The party theme was centered around Abby's love of Art.
The guests had fun creating artwork and at Abby's request for a Vincent Van Gogh, Leanne created this beautiful recreation of "Starry Starry Night"

The following weekend brought a visit from Nathan, Megan and boys. Here we are at Avila Farms where we took a hay ride to the Apple Orchard.

Nolan Joins Our Family

Each new grandchild is such a precious gift. Nolan joined our family on August 22nd. By coincidence I flew from New York to Santa Barbara on that very day and was driving up to San Luis Obispo when I learned that Kelli was in the hospital and delivery was eminent. I was thrilled to visit the hospital soon after he was born.

Next morning I brought Scarlett and Lila to the hospital to meet their new little brother.

Happy Grammy! I got to spend a few days after Nolan came home

with Jared and Kelli and the girls.

Papa flew out a few days later to meet our newest grandson.

Kelli's Photography skills were tested to the max to capture this treasure.

We celebrated Papa's 60th birthday with a road trip along the beautiful Central CA coast.

North Carolina Fun

Early in August Jason and Kimberly spent a week in Europe where Jason completed an Iron Man competition in Germany. What an amazing accomplishment for him and his very supportive wife.

Meanwhile back in NC, I got to hang out with these cute kids. They did some serious fort building while their parents were gone since it was HOT outside. We went to 3 movies. Yep I've seen my quota of animation for the year and we went swimming to cool off a couple of days.
One day we went with the Becks to the Durham Museum of Life and Science. Very cool! Not the weather but the indoor and outdoor experience.

This is Maddie after she recovered from the trauma of seeing "my mommy" on Skype. Her parents actually left her in charge of me and the boys. (I was kind of a figure head)
Randy flew down to hang out with us on the weekend and so we all went to the Planetarium in Chapel Hill. Here Ethan was chosen to participate in a Science Experiment.

July Fun in the Sun

On July 1st Randy and I flew to San Diego where we met up with my mom at the airport and drove to Ryan and Leanne's Oceanside Condo to spend 2 nights. It was a busy 4th of July weekend and the beaches were crowded but we enjoyed the ocean view from the comfort of their home. Ryan treated us to a yummy dinner out where he and Leanne announced that they are expecting TWINS! We have since learned that one is a boy and the other is not yet revealing. Such happy happy news!

On Saturday we met at Todd & Ashley's home for the blessing of precious Ryan Ashley

On Sunday we all caravaned to San Luis Obispo to gather with the Francis family for the 4th of July extravaganza at Ryan and Leanne's 100 year old historic barn.

At the end of the day all of the family posed for an impromptu photo. We hung out in San Luis Obispo for a few days and attended a baby shower for Kelli hosted by Felicity and Leanne.

Later in the week we went to Southern California where we rented a condo with Jason and Kimberly's family. We spent a day at Sea World and got to hang out with Nathan, Todd and Kelli's family. Friday night all of us gathered for service in the San Diego Temple. As good as it gets! On Saturday we met again at a private beach in Oceanside to celebrate Max's annual Beach Day.

Our kids, in conjunction with the Francis family, planned some great activities, including lego building competition, "minute to win it" and a balloon launch, each carrying a message written to Max. There was great food, surfing, volleyball and just the joy of being together.

We returned to NY but the fun wasn't over! Rhonda flew out later in the week to spend a few days. We headed with Randy to Palmyra to see the 'Hill Cumorah Pageant' It was superb! Here we are in the Sacred Grove.

I finally got to meet our newest granddaughter Ryan the end of May. I flew out to Southern California to "help" Ashley & Todd for a few days but mostly I held the baby, played with the boys and went to the beach and Disneyland. Randy was supposed to join me later in the week but required emergency surgery for a detached retina and was not allowed to fly which made both of us sad.

Isn't she a beauty? Ryan fully cooperated at her photo shoot with Kelli. Sleepy in her Daddy's arms. Safe? In her brother's arms?

Besides all the other fun, I attended both Toby and Ben's baseball games and went swinging with the grand kids at the park.

Of course there was a war to be fought on the trampoline in Nathan's backyard.
I rode with Nathan and Megan and boys to San Luis Obispo to attend Scarlett and Lila's "Pinkalicious Party" at Ryan and Leanne's San Luis Obispo Ranch. Charlie and Scarlett were dressed pink for the occasion.

Kimberly and her friend Rachel drove their kids up from North Carolina to spend the week before Easter with us in New York. Jason and Rachel's husband Matt flew in Thursday evening. The weather was rather cool and rainy but we made the best of it.

With 7 kids the Easter Egg Coloring Production was EASY. Papa made creamed eggs for breakfast with the colored eggs. The big (candy) Easter egg hunt was relegated to the basement due to the rain.

Cruisin' Hawaii

In celebration of our 60th Birthdays, Ryan, Leanne, Abby and Charlie treated us to a 1st class Hawaiian cruise. Check out Leanne's blog for some great pictures

Our first stop was Maui where we docked overnight and spent two sun drenched days. Of course we rented a car and took the road to Hanna visiting the 7 Sacred Pools

Ryan watched from below as swimmers timidly perched on the rocks above for several minutes trying to get the courage to jump into the pool below. Then he calmly climbed the rock face and dove head first showing them just how it should be done.

We braved the road less traveled returning back to our ship by circling the island

Next morning we drove to Napili Bay to taste the famous macademia nut pancakes at the Gazebo Restaurant overlooking the water. Yum!

We spent the rest of the day soaking up some sun and playing in the surf

The next morning found us in Hilo where we took a gorgeous hike through the rain forest

And visited a beautiful waterfall... In the afternoon Ryan, Leanne, Randy and Abby took a helicopter tour of the Big Island and volcano while Charlie and Grammy hung out on land

Next day we arrived in Kona. You can see our ship anchored offshore. We spent a lazy day shopping and dining along the water front and spotted these monkeys in a tree

We entertained the passengers on the tender back to ship with our newly discovered Hawaiaan candy

Our ship then docked in Kaui for 2 days. In spite of stormy weather we took a catamaran out to the Napoli Coast to view the beautiful cliffs.

It was a wild ride to say the least with several passengers tossing their cookies. Thankfully, Charlie slept through the worst of it.

The afternoon of our second day in Kaui we set sail and took the "big boat" up the Napoli coast for a sunset view. This picture was taken from the balcony of our luxurious accomodation.

We got off the ship on Saturday but the party wasn't over. Ryan treated us to a night at the Turtle Bay Hilton on the North Shore. We enjoyed the beautiful grounds and swam in the pools.

Later in the day we visited the Polynesian Cultural Center, enjoyed a luau and saw the spectacular evening show.

What an amazing and memorable cruise! Thank you Ryan.

Spring has Sprung

The calendar thinks Spring has arrived so I'm going to go with it! But this was the view from my front window this morning and more snow is coming Wednesday. The winter in NY this year was long, cold and very snowy but with all that was happening in my life it flew by very quickly! I was just getting settled in (snowed in might be more appropriate) when a plea for help was heard from "across the pond". Kelli had announced at Christmas that she was pregnant with her 3rd and that this time she wasn't going to be sick. That lasted for about 3 days. By mid January she and Jared had made the decision to move back to the USA and she was desperately ill. I flew to Budapest on January 20th in my usual drama laden fashion that included a cancelled flight, a race through the Paris airport, tossing my cookies on the plane and the companionship from NY to Budapest of a woman my age from Jackson, WY named Ann Kelley (that is my maiden and the way it is spelled). I spent 2 and a half weeks in Budapest caring for Kelli (not photographable), looking after Jared, Lila and Scarlett, and helping sort, pack and sell all of their worldly possessions. Meanwhile it was cold and wintry there and my only car was a stroller. It was fun though to spend so much time with my girls. When I returned to the US I came with 20 month old Lila in tow. She was such a good little traveler and I really enjoyed bringing her home and caring for her here. The next weekend she flew with me and Papa to North Carolina to spend a long weekend with Jason, Kimberly and family. We drove out to Asheville NC where we toured the gorgeous Vanderbuilt mansion and then up to the Smokey Mountains where we rented a cabin for a couple of nights. Lila threw up in the car, Maddie had an asthma attack, the minivan couldn't negotiate the hill to the cabin, and it was too cold and windy to ski BUT we had a wonderful time together.
Two days after returning from North Carolina, Kelli, Jared and Scarlett arrived in NY. Jared began his drive West while the girls hung out here. Their scheduled reunion in the West was delayed when Kelli and Lila became very ill the day they were to leave so they spent another 5 days with us.
We enjoyed some lunches out and did some shoe shopping. They are now contentedly settled in San Luis Obispo and Kelli is finally feeling better. I celebrated my 60th birthday the day they left and 2 weeks later Randy and I flew to Southern California to attend Gavin's baptism.
It was a memorable weekend with family and friends.

Randy and Ron threw a 60th birthday bash for Rhonda and me inviting many of our Southern California friends and all of our kids and spouses.
Jason and Kim were the only ones unable to come and they walked in the back door of Todd's home the afternoon of the party. Such a surprise! We stayed with Todd's family and got to see Ryan and Leanne's beautiful new beach home.

Holidays in Morocco and Spain

The day after Christmas we left Budapest and flew (via Belgium) to Fez Morocco. Our amazing travel guide Jared had made all of the arrangements for us to spend two incredible days there exploring the ancient walled city.

The girls were weary with all of the walking so we hired a "driver" for them. Everyone one who passed stopped to look and/or laugh at the driver. I don't think they had ever seen anything quite like it. But we paid him well so he got the last laugh!

Christmas in Budapest

We flew to Europe to spend Christmas with Ryan and Kelli's families and made some never to be forgotten memories.
Christmas Day in Budapest we took the four girls to see "The Nutcracker" at the Opera House

Thanksgiving!

OK...so it is January but I'm not going to post Christmas till I review Thanksgiving. We hosted a house full and enjoyed every minute. Randy's parents flew out the week before with Randy's sister Peggy and her husband Jim. Kim and Jason and their family arrived the day before and stayed till the next week. We were joined on Thanksgiving day by Jessica and Jared and their kids and Brent and Cryssi (Jim's daughter) and their two boys.

Before Thanksgiving we visited Plymouth Rock MA where it all began.

Everyone helped with the food preparation. Randy brined and cooked the turkey.
We spent the day after Thanksgiving in NYC!

Randy and I spent Halloween in sunny beautiful California this year. We flew out to be with Ryan's family and friends as he was honored with an Outstanding Trial Attorney award in the greater San Diego area. We took a weekend trip up to San Luis Obispo with their family and then returned to Todd's home for a Halloween Party with some of our grand kids.
It didn't take much to create this look. In fact it gets more natural every year.

Family Time

Two weeks ago we flew to Raleigh and joined Ryan, Todd, and Nathan's families in a trek to the Outer Banks. Ryan had rented a large home on the beach and invited us all to come along with he and Leanne's good friends Rob and Felicity and their kids. Jason's family joined us for the last two nights.The weather was gorgeous all week and we had such a great time.While there we celebrated Abby's 8th birthday. Here she is doing some artwork with her new colored pencils.

Our Max

I knew when I woke up this morning that today would be the day I would finally blog. I love capturing my life and especially those I love with pictures and memories here. And so today I write about Max.

Ten years ago Randy and I gathered with Leanne's parents and some of our children in La Jolla to await Max's birth. We were at the hospital for over 12 hours before we heard his first squeal from the hall outside the delivery room. Every grandparent knows that the birth of that first grandchild is as exciting as the birth of your own first child (but less painful).

I adored everything about Max from the first moment I held him. I remember walking along the beach with him asleep in my arms a week after he was born and feeling so happy and full of love. A few days later I remember gathering with the Francis family in Ryan and Leanne's small apartment at Wind and Sea where Ryan gave Max a name and a blessing. Max wore the same outfit his dad had been blessed in.

That first year of Max's life we drove from Orange to San Diego two or three times every month to be with him and his parents. We literally entertained ourselves by sitting around him and watching him play. Everything he did was magical and we cheered him on like he was the most amazing kid ever born.

We gathered with friends and family for his first birthday party at a park in San Diego. Leanne had made the most creative fish cake and all of us watched expectantly as she placed it in front of him. He took one look at it and burst into tears. Something about that eye staring up at him was terrifying and he never would eat a gold fish cracker that had an eye.

About the time Max turned one, his parents went on a get-a-way and left him with Papa and me. They had been trying to get him to walk but he just refused to take off on his own. Soon after Ryan and Leanne walked out the door, Randy and Jason and I were sitting in our family room visiting while Max played. We looked up as he turned around, let go of the ottoman and walked across the room. From that moment on he walked everywhere and out to the driveway to meet his parents when they returned home a few days later.

It seemed like Max had just started walking when he began riding a skateboard with his little helmet on. He loved the beach and grew up playing in the sand and water.

As soon as he began to talk we were all convinced he was a genius. And I'm pretty sure he was. His memory of people and places was phenomenal as was his ability to communicate with adults from an early age.One day his parents were quizzing him on the real name of his grandparents. Looking at pictures he identified Nana as Diane, Papa Mike as Mike, Papa Randy as Randy, but when he got to my picture he proclaimed "That's Grammy Ice Cream Cone" and the name has stuck.

The most difficult thing about moving from California to New York was leaving Max, our only grandchild at the time. We missed seeing him more than anyone because he was changing and growing day to day. We traveled West often to spend time with him and our children. I think during his 10 years of life I only missed being at one birthday celebration.

Within the year after we left California Abby was born and other grandchildren followed. Each one came with their own personality and gifts and each one found a special place in my heart. Through the years we have gathered often and spent countless hours playing in the sand at the beach, eating at Ruby's on the pier and Taco Mesa, watching the skateboarders in Ryan's backyard or swimming in the pool. We have gathered for weddings, holidays and family reunions from Montauk to Ventura to Idaho to the Outer Banks. We have been to Disneyland, Lego Land and I am so thankful for the time spent and memories created with my kids and grand kids.

The first Christmas we were in New York, all of our children came to celebrate the holiday. It snowed and I have a happy memory of playing in the snow with Max and riding a sled down the long slope of our driveway with him in my arms. He and his family came to visit us several times since we have been in New York. He loved to dress up in the costumes he would discover in the basement. He liked to walk the bike path and on at least two occasions found a snake.

As Max grew he became a wonderful friend and leader to his younger cousins. How they looked up to him. They argued over who got to sit by him in the car or at the dinner table. They wanted to be like Max who loved pirates and Star Wars and Legos. Each one thought that they were his favorite. That's just the way Max made you feel. The final day of Max's life his cousins gathered on the steps of the lake house and chanted "Max Max Max" in anticipation of his arrival.

Max was a superb student in school and a leader in his classroom and among his peers. He loved to read and could be found lying in his bed late into the night reading his latest adventure. He loved music and had the confidence to sing karaoke with the adults and play guitar or drums on the Wi Rock Band. He took piano lessons and would download music from the Internet and play by ear. He played the violin and was planning to learn to play the guitar.

He loved to assemble the most advanced Lego kits and saved his money to buy the latest new product. He began to design his own creations and had ambition to someday be a designer for Lego.

Max loved people! And they loved him! Adults and children alike! He used to call me and Papa and talk and talk about what he had been doing. Even as he grew older he was never embarrassed to give us a big hug and kiss. That is the last memory I have of Max....bounding down the hill towards me and hugging and kissing me before he ran off to play on the lake with his cousins.

One of Heavenly Father's tender mercies to me was the opportunity to go out to California and stay with Max and his sisters twice this year. I loved spending time with the kids and remember playing lots of board games, going to the movies and eating frozen yogurt, walking to church together, playing at the park and at the beach, playing handball in the driveway and reading books on the lawn of their elementary school.

One Saturday morning while I was watching them, Max told me he had arranged to meet his friends in downtown Oceanside at the street fair. They had plans to play their violins on the street with open cases to make some money. I initially resisted since we had plans to meet Nathan and Megan's family at the beach but I could tell how much it meant to him so I relented. Of course the friends never showed up but Max was undeterred. He sat down in front of the fountain at the Library, opened his case and played for about a half hour while those passing by admired his talent and threw money into his open case.

Max loved every day and often proclaimed it to be the"Best Day of His Life". He did everything was such enthusiasm. Leanne created a magical childhood environment for him and his sisters. At the Beach House he didn't walk down the stairs, he slid down on a big slide. The playroom was the scene of a grand puppet theatre where Max and the girls could demonstrate their creativity by putting on shows for all of their guests. The bathroom was a pirate's den complete with a hanging skeleton.

At his latest home, his bedroom was a magical scene. His high canopied bed was accessed by a motorized chair and he had everything he needed to organize his thousands of Legos and books and treasures. He liked to ride bikes and had recently attended "Surf Camp" where he took 1st place. He was so proud and was just beginning to enjoy the surf with his Dad. The day of his accident he was so excited to be there at the lake with everyone and to play in the water on the tubes and water weenie.

Max was possibly the most loving person I have yet met in this life. His love was uncomplicated and unconditional and he was very patient and very kind to his sisters and always respectful to his parents. I remember dropping him off and picking him up at school and watching him walk with Abby to and from her class each day. If the Primary children were singing in church he would lead Charlie to the stand and sing with his arm around her. He was openly affectionate with everyone and exuberantly greeted you as if you were his favorite.

For his memorial service we ask family and friends to share their memories of Max. The outpouring of affection for him was just another evidence of the kind of person he was.
He was an example to me of how to live and love, a gift to all who knew him during his short life and I believe he was an angel among us. Even in his passing he and his courageous family have taught us how to live and love. I will be forever grateful for this precious boy and look forward to my joyous reunion with him someday. I love you Max.

Happy Father's Day

When I married Randy I had no clue what a terrific Dad he would be to our 5 kids! I consider myself and them very blessed. His love and example have always spoken louder than his words. To celebrate Father's Day this year I'll be taking him (in the near future) to see Promises Promises on Broadway. Love you Randy!

I hung out with Ethan, Colin and Maddie last week while their mom and dad enjoyed some R&R in the Turks and Caicos.
Ethan kept Grammy busy thinking up amazing things to create with Legos
Sweet Maddie kept me busy worrying when she was diagnosed with asthma the day before I became her caretaker. A complete novice in this area, I learned a lot about her treatment including an emergency trip (or 2) to the doctor. Of course, through it all, she smiled and tried hard to be her adorable self.
Colin was such a sweet boy. I cherished the quiet moments when just he and I read the Fish book and sang "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" before nap and bedtime.
Papa joined me for the weekend. We went to Ethan's t-ball game and played lots of UNO
Love all my sweet grandkids. Spending a few days with them makes me remember how very busy their mama's are!

Playing with the Boston Boys

Last week and the past 2 weekends I got to hang out with Toby, Ben and Chase in New York and Boston while their parents played in Bali. Time with this trio is both exhilarating and exhausting.
Getting to church and school on time was EASY since they all get up between 5:30 and 6:00 am.
I wouldn't be Grammy Ice Cream cone if we didn't have ice cream served almost daily in a cone.
The boys love to head to my basement and dress up. There was lots of clowning around and some face paint clean up.
And lots of creative Lego projects...
Of course we went hot tubbing, water gunning and all other forms of danger seeking.
While in Boston I got to visit Toby's Open House at school. I held tightly to Chase, the destroyer's hand. Within 30 seconds of entering the classroom he kicked the life size wooden block ship that the students had built for the event.
While Todd and Ashley played with the monkeys in Indonesia, Grammy played with the Monkeys at one of several playgrounds. The highlight was jumping the huge trampoline in their backyard.

On Saturday we drove to a nearby river, waterfall, and covered bridge and went hiking.
Always an adventure with Toby, Ben and Chase! Grammy enjoyed almost every minute!

I spent 5 days in California earlier in April with Max, Abby and Charlie while their parents enjoyed some R&R in Chicago. I got to hang out with Gavin, Miles and Tate too. Here we are on the beach on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
Max used the Oceanside Art's Festival as an opportunity to entertain visitors with some violin music. He was a hit and made some cash for his effort.
The girls and I came along to offer our support and do a little shopping at the festival.

Winter turns to Spring

Colin, Ethan and Maddie came to Grammy and Papa's to stay all of last week and brought Spring with them! When the rain finally stopped we did some fun things like ride the train to Mt. Kisco to meet Papa for lunch.
We spent a day at the famous Bronx Zoo and then another day in beautiful Central Park in NYC
The boys had a great time playing with their cousins and enjoying the warm weather.

Papa helped the kids color eggs and then everyone participated in a big Easter Egg Hunt. Addi came with her parents Jared and Jessica to join in the fun.

Grammy and Papa got to know Maddie better. What a sweet baby!

I was surrounded by people that I love during the month of February! Kelli, Jared, Scarlett and Lila brought lots of sunshine to an other wise cloudy and snowy winter. On President's weekend Ashley, Todd, Toby, Ben and Chase's visit added to the warmth. During the month I celebrated my thirty something birthday and we took a weekend ski trip to Killington Vermont.

I have spent the past two weeks hanging out with the grand kids. I missed being with Ethan, Colin and Maddie but they are coming to visit next month.

Randy and I went to Boston this past weekend to celebrate Chase and Toby's (belated) birthdays. It was very cold but we tried out their new trampoline. We were creating some weird energy....check out Ben's hair.

Birthdays were celebrated at "Monkey Joes" jump house with several of Toby's friends. Chase got in on all the action, including climbing the highest slides with no fear!

The weekend before I was in Southern California hanging out with Max, Abby and Charlie while their mom and dad vacationed in Guatemala. We had such a fun time. Rhonda came down to visit. Megan took us to Pretend City with Gavin, Miles and Tate, then the boys came over for a sleepover. We played on the beach and saw "Tooth Fairy" plus had breakfast at Ruby's on the Oceanside Pier. I got to visit with Nathan and Megan and Ryan and Leanne too.

We enjoyed the Christmas holiday in California where we spent time with all of our grand kids. Everyone was together for 4 days at a rented Beach home in Ventura.

We had a memorable Thanksgiving this year. The evening before we took the train to NYC with Todd's family to see the Macy's Parade floats as they were filled in preparation for the next morning. Back in Carmel we were joined by Jared, Jessica and Addi in anticipation of the holiday.

Grammy bribed these early risers to sleep in each morning by offering a prize if no adult was awakened before 7 am. It was beautiful!
Of course there was some Beatles' Rock Band. Even these two cuties got in on the action. To our knowledge Chase had not been drinking.

On Saturday I rode my broom to Boston with my Dressed to Thrill partner at my side to attend Ben's Birthday/Halloween party. Unfortunately we scared the 20 children at the party and I had to lose my chin and teeth to convince even my own grandkids that I was their Grammy.

Ashley (the party girl) had decorated the house inside and out and served soup and salad to the adults and theme cut sandwiches, cheeses and fruits to the kids. There were fun games to play outside on what turned out to be a warm and beautiful (though breezy) day.

Ben was so excited to be 4 and to celebrate with his friends!On Sunday we spent some time at the beautiful Pier Park near Winthrop enjoying the sights of Boston and 3 energetic little boys who greeted daylight savings time with a 5 am wakeup!

Leaf Peepers Visit New York

Tis the season when long lost family and friends flock to New York / Connecticut to leaf peep. We had a houseful most of October and even though the weather was rainy, the leaves did not dissappoint. Last Saturday we ventured to Essex Ct. to ride a century old steam engine and tour boat along the Connecticut River. Jim, Grandad, Peggy, Jared, Addi and Jessica. New England Fall

Fall here in NY is definitely my favorite season! Randy spent 2 weeks of it in China :( but Jason, Kim and family came to keep me company for a week.

Randy and I recently spent a week in North Carolina with Jason and Ryan's families. Besides celebrating Abby's birthday and blessing Madeline, we were thrilled with Jason and Leanne's first place win as team East and West in the Bushwack Adventure Race. After the eventful weekend we drove 4 hours east to Rodanthe where the boys had rented a beautiful beach home for the week. The weather was sunny, the waves in front of the house were awesome, the pool was heated and we had such a relaxing and enjoyable time.

Randy, my mom and I celebrated Randy's birthday this past weekend with a road trip to upstate NY and western MA. We traveled through some beautiful country stopping along the way to take in the sights.

This is a picture of Randy in Easton NY at the very church where his ancestor Nathan Harris worshipped before joining the church and moving to Nauvoo.

We spent the night in historic Deerfield MA at lovely bed and breakfast. The next day we toured some of the 350 year old homes on the same street.

The highlight of our jaunt was Tanglewood where we enjoyed a picnic on the great lawn along with 18,000 other people and listened to John Williams conduct the Boston Pops and James Taylor woo us all.

Monday night we officially celebrated Randy's birthday with a home made coconut cake.

I spent last week with Jason and Kimberly's family in North Carolina to "help out" with the new baby. It turned out to be a very relaxing and fun week for me. I guess my favorite part was holding adorable 3 week old Madeline. I'd heard from her parents that she was smiling at them from week 1. They had even forwarded pictures. "Silly parents" thought I..."the baby has gas." And then I witnessed it myself. Total eye contact and big smile response when you talk to her. I have never seen such a thing at such a young age!!! Here she is in her Grandma Rhonda blanket.

Kimberly is managing so well that she took me on hikes in the beautiful NC forests (before she broke her toe) and made homemade crepes for lunch. Thanks Kimberly for making me feel so welcome.

Ethan and Colin are both so sweet with their new sister, very gentle, loving and proud.

Randy joined me for the weekend. Can't believe I didn't get pictures of him with the baby. We enjoyed a nice hike with Jason and Ethan on Saturday and were treated by Jason and Kimberly to some very fine dining including a mean white chocolate/lemon souffle. Thanks guys!

3 weeks ago these cuties came to stay at Grammy's with their mom (and sometimes Dad) as they transitioned from their home in NYC back to their home in Winthrop MA.
Wild raspberries were ripe and we found them all along the bike trail and the back of our property. Chase was a BIG FAN!

Full of energy and and imagination this is quite the trio.

Grammy and Papa were sad to say goodbye but excited for them to settle into their big home with a yard!

Bike Trail

Those of you who have visited our home in Carmel know that we have a beautiful bike trail that runs through our neighborhood.

This morning we took a ride and I took some photos to show the barns, lakes, streams, wildflowers, ferns and fresh raspberries that we picked along the trail.

We are having a very wet and cool summer and it has never been so lush and beautiful here.

Lightning struck near our home last night about 11 pm and knocked out our internet, phone and TV.

When we returned home I took a picture of one of my hydrangea and

Randy and I flew to Southern California to celebrate the 4th of July with Ryan and Nathan's families. We had such a great time hanging out with the grand kids.
Abby is such a creative girl. She designed this avocado flower dip for our 4th of July barbecue. Such yummy food!!!

After the weekend I stayed in San Juan Capistrano to hang out with Tate, Miles and Gavin while their parents escaped to Maui for a few days. I fell in love with precious Tate and got lots of hugs from him.

This was the best smile I got from Miles but underneath that tough exterior is a really sweet boy.

Gavin is so grown up and was such a big help in caring for his brothers. I miss him.

One day we hung out at the beach in Oceanside with Max, Abby, Charlie and their Mom. Charlie is always fun to be with.

We have a 24 hour respite from our soggy East Coast "summer" so I took some pictures from the yard. The foilage and flowers are loving it! Yesterday alone we got 2.5 inches of rain and there is more on the way tomorrow.

European Adventure

After Randy arrived in Europe, we spent a few days in Budapest and then traveled to Rome where we spent 3 days touring the sights.

We knew the Smiths were in Italy and planned to meet them in Rome. Imagine our surprise when we ran into them at Pompeii as we arrived together in the parking lot.

We spent several hours at Pompeii and walked the entire village. It was fascinating!!!

Randy and I drove the Amalfi Coast in a little red stick shift Fiat. It was gorgeous whenever I dared to open my eyes. Those of you who have driven the narrow cliff hanging road with Italian drivers know what I am talking about.

We rendezvoused again with Mark and Pauline in Rome and spent 2 days visiting the ruins and dining at sidewalk cafes. Memorable!

After returning to Budapest for Lila's blessing we flew to Romania with Kelli, Jared,

Scarlett and Lila for 5 days.

While in Romania we arranged with the Hansons to meet at the Sinai train station in the mountains near Bucharest. What a treat to see them, spend the morning touring the former Romania King Karl's castle and enjoy lunch together before sending them back to their mission home in Bucharest. Elder Hanson proselyted all the way up and down the trail to the castle.

Grammy Ice Cream Cone's granddaughter knows and loves her ice cream. She started with a frozen fruit pop (silly Mom) and traded it for Grammy's chocolate thing.

One of the highlights of our visit to Romania was a stay at Count Tibor's place in Miclosoara, Transylvania. Talk about the middle of no where. It was as if we had stepped back a century. Cows, chickens, roosters, horses, sheep, horse drawn wagons carrying cans of fresh milk, hay, wood, whatever...

We ate dinner with the other guests in a 17th century wine cellar but the highlight for me was learning that Prince Charles and his entourage had stayed there on 3 occasions, the latest being 2 weeks before we arrived.

Papa Arrives in Budapest

I am having such fun hanging out with my European grand daughters. Scarlett, who is 2 going on 5, insists on doing EVERYTHING herself. She climbs in her high chair, buckles herself in, puts on her bib, feeds herself and then cleans up and reverses the process. She opens the juice box and fills her own cup, dresses herself head to foot after she has picked out her clothes and tells me where to sit when we go to the park. The first time we returned home alone I was having trouble opening the door. She waited patiently for a minute and then pointed out that I was trying the wrong dead bolt and indicated which one I should use. She cracks me up!

Baby Lila loves to eat! She has regained her birth weight plus some and thinks she must be hungry if she is not asleep. She can really raise a ruccus and is not interested in a binky. But she has rewarded her mom with some serious night time sleeping.
Scarlett loves to play at the neighborhood park and can hold her own with all ages. She climbs to the top of the slide and sits till she is ready to move. She likes to watch people and they make quite a fuss over her especially when she hits the streets in the red boots her Nana gave her. She carries her own umbrella (of course) when she is out and about.

A Day in the THE CITY

Yesterday Randy and I woke up feeling free and wild. We "bagged" the yard work and "honey do list" and headed to New York City for the day. Some of the highlights of our most exciting adventure included:

Spring Sprung!

After a crazy hot weekend with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees Thursday to 87 degrees Saturday and Sunday... Spring came overnight!!! Randy and I worked in the yard for hours and hosted guests from our ward for dinner Saturday night. Jessica Sorensen joined us and spent the night before heading to Hartford to find a place to call home for the next 2 years while Jared finishes his Dental residency.

The Kuhn Brother's wives Amy Rita and Mandy, visiting NYC with Leanne, came up on Metro North Sunday evening for dinner and some sightseeing in the country.

What else would you expect at Grammy Ice Cream Cone's house

on a hot afternoon? Toby, Ben and Chase came to play on Friday.

For the 1st time in 6 months the temperature soared to over 70 degrees this past weekend. Chase, Ben and Toby came out for a couple of nights while their mom and dad got away to celebrate his 30th birthday. The boys were a great help in our marathon gardening adventure on Saturday. We rewarded them with a soak in the hot tub and a "happy" meal at McD's.

A Celebration of Easter

Todd, Ashley and boys rode the train to Carmel to spend Easter weekend with us. Friday night we colored and sparkled Easter eggs in preparation for the holiday.

After Easter church services, where Randy directed the our ward choir, and we celebrated the resurrection of our Savior, we gathered at home for Easter dinner. Julianne Parker and her friend Stephanie rode Metro North from the City to join us . Afterwards we bowled on the Wii and ended the evening with a little Rock Band...

Conference Weekend

Randy and I loved our productive, inspirational and relaxing Conference Weekend. It didn't begin so great when a truck load of mulch was dropped on our neighbor's property (per our instructions) on a very cold, windy and rainy Saturday morning.

We spent 3 hours shoveling and transporting the mulch to our needy flower beds...a task that left us exhausted. Just as we finished, however, Meagan and Mason arrived to spend a couple of days and bring some sunshine.

They left Nic back home studying to take his medical boards. We enjoyed both sessions of Conference during which I finished the pirate quilt I am making for Kelli.

After conference we treated ourselves to barbecued ribs at "Holy Smokes" and played Farkle. Sunday we had dinner and took a walk on the trail inbetween Conference sessions We ended the day with a "Settlers" game and said goodbye to Meagan and Mason Monday morning...we are really going to miss this little family when they move West in June.

Winter Wonderlands

I returned this week from a 7 day visit to Utah and Idaho to visit my brothers, sister and Mom. The weather was very wintry but I really enjoyed time spent with family.

Thanks to all of you for making my visit so memorable.

This scene greeted me the morning after my arrival at Mike and Kris's home.

The night before I enjoyed dinner at Cafe Rio with their family plus Brooke, Greg and sons.

Plus I got a tour of the new offices for Nuriche.

The day after I arrived at Mom's home in Shelley we joined Greg and Penni on a get-a-way at their lovely and peaceful cabin in the pines in Island Park. They masterfully built and designed every inch of it themselves working long Saturdays for 7 years. I tried hard not to covet (:

Greg took me on a beautiful snowmoblie ride through trees
and meadows and over a frozen lake.

Even my Mom got in on the action!

We lounged by the fire and watched the birds and wildlife

while our excellent hosts took good care of us.

Not all wildlife was welcomed. Greg terrorized the squirrels with his 22.

Back in Shelley on Sunday we attended church and spent

the afternoon inside while a blizzard raged.

We enjoyed dinner at Jeff and Shayla's

home and celebrated Cambria and Harrison's 9th birthday

On my way back through Utah I met up with Judy,

Rachel, Megan and sweet sleepy Emerie for lunch.

That night I enjoyed dinner out

with Paul, Julie, Erin, Tyson, Meredith and cute little Taggart.

I had a great trip and was thankful to return home safely after learning

that the van I took from SLC to IF and back again rolled over on icy roads

at the Malad pass the next day.

26 Years ago on March 20th we were very surprised to welcome this little girl to our family! And in spite of her 4 rowdy brothers and inexperienced parents, she grew up to be a beautiful woman, wife, and mother. We love you Kelli and are thinking of you today wishing you didn't live so far away.

Keeping Busy at Grammy's House

Colin and Ethan flew to New York last week with Kimberly who left the next day for 82 hours in San Diego with Jason. While the parents were away we...played the Wii, drove the outside race cars, played 'chicken foot', 'Uno', and 'Guess Who', drew pictures, sculpted 'Play Dough', raced boats in the hot tub, watched videos, read books, created a giant "Geo" track and, of course, ate ice cream.

This adorable cherub (you can't believe the stories his parents are telling) let Grammy rock him and sing to him every night. Sadly he got sick before his mommy and daddy came back.

This grown up boy had lots of ideas of fun things to do.

Ashley and boys came out on the train for a sleep over. It was a great "cousin reunion" with virtually no skirmishes in spite of several vicious animal sightings.

Chase entertained us by learning to walk!

CrazY Weather

A week ago today we were grounded by a nasty blizzard that gave Randy a "Snow Day" and left us with about 8 inches of drifted snow and bitter cold (single digit) temperatures.

On Thursday Ashley and the boys came out for a visit and we had some fun in the sun sliding down the hill behind our home.

BUT...when Randy and I went to NYC on Saturday the temperature skyrocketed to 73 degrees. We spent the morning in Central Park with tens of thousands of others from the Upper West side of the city who were ecstatic about the sudden change of weather.

The warmer weather made this Mom giddy with hope that the long dreary winter could be coming to a close.

Ben ripped it up all over the park on his Razor.

Even Papa Randy got in on the action.

Toby raced past everyone on his bike.

Chase practiced his walking at the Central Park Carousal.

Warm enough for frozen treats!!!

Glad to spend a day with Dad.
